What can we learn about Sofia Richie’s style evolution?

In 2023, Sofia Richie Grange became a fashion IT girl that we desperately needed. She brought forth an amazing sense of elegance from her everyday fashion to her wedding styles that caught the eyes of many. While her elegant old-money style was put on display for the world to see at her French Riviera wedding to Elliot Grange, that was not always her go-to look.
We all know that Sofia is the daughter of legendary singer Lionel Richie and sister to the Y2K icon Nicole Richie, but my first introduction to her was when she dated Justin Bieber. After a short-lived drama-filled romance with the Biebz, she then dated Scott Disick. I believe that the fact that she was surrounded by the Kardashians/Jenners for most of this relationship greatly affected her style.
Sofia’s style during this period reflected elements of Kim, Kylie, and Khloe. These looks are NOT my fave… While a lot of the world was also after the Kar-Jenner-influenced looks during this period, does not mean that they were good… I do think that this style was what people saw the most for Sofia, that is why I feel her style rebrand caught so many people’s attention.
Flash forward to April 2023, Sofia Richie is getting married to Elliot Grange at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Rock, an oceanfront retreat in the French Rivera. That is when the world caught wind of Sofia’s style rebrand… as Eloise at the Plaza would say, it was très élégant.
From vintage Chanel, The Row, to a trio of custom Chanel Haute Couture dresses, Sofia showed the world that she is the new fashion IT girl. Sofia’s wedding looks had a chic modesty to them. Every look was gorgeous without being too flashy or revealing too much. It showed a sense of maturity in her style that also reflected the woman she grew into.
Sofia’s Wedding cemented her spot in the fashion world. The ‘old money’ trend blew up on social media platforms following the wedding. Many were trying to implement Sofia’s simple elegance into their own everyday wardrobe (I was and have been every day since).
Sofia’s rope braided bun/her everyday bun was also quite the trend on social media. I was inspired to give that hairstyle a go until I tried it and remembered I was an ex-ballerina who hates the way she looks in buns more than anything and swore them off forever… but Sofia sure looked good in it!
Less than a year after her unforgettably beautiful wedding and becoming a style icon, Sofia graced the world with a Vogue photoshoot to announce her pregnancy (spoiler alert… she’s having a girl who will most likely have a wardrobe I am jealous of). Yet again, she kept the shoot simple and classy, focusing on her pregnancy more than anything else.
What can we learn from Sofia’s style evolution? Many say Sofia’s style today is the Elliot Grainge effect… I beg to differ. While I think the lifestyle she lives with Elliot may have some effect on her style, I think that the main reason for her style evolution is maturity.
As I mentioned previously, my first introduction to Sofia was when she dated Justin Bieber, she was only seventeen. She was only nineteen when she dated Scott Disick. I don’t know about you, but my style at seventeen and nineteen is DRASTICALLY different than what I would wear now at 23. I am sure Sofia would say the same.
While growing up and learning from different experiences in life, Sofia found her sense of style. The world got to see this evolution and became obsessed with Sofia’s chic, effortless beauty that is not seen a lot in today’s celebrity fashion.
While the internet may be right that we all need to go find our own versions of Elliot Grainge, I think we should not discredit the fact the beautiful life and style we see in Sofia is because we got to watch her grow up and mature into the elegant woman she is today. Sofia’s fashion has made a mark in my everyday wardrobe as well as my Pinterest boards. I am sure there will be many more classy Sofia looks for me to pin in the years to come.
